Well, I will get straight to the point, since I already have a post on how to speak in public. However, I noticed that most of us lack a good reason to want to do it. So here I am, me and my point of view, basically.
Speaking in front of an audience filled with strangers is a challenge that will make you feel defied. The feeling-defied-part comes from trying to find the proper and effective way to make people from diverse backgrounds/training/experiences follow what you are telling them. Here, your main goal is to be listened and understood.
You will then work very hard towards the talk-obstacle until you feel fulfilled with the results. In the case of a public speech, your challenge is to make people from diverse backgrounds understand you, so, you will need to search the proper way to do it. This will reward you with satisfaction, which is a positive feeling.
But the rewarding feeling is not everything, to be able to talk to a bunch of different people you need to understand your own words from others ears'. You, indeed, need to understand their perspectives and find the way to pass your idea to them. This is not only about other people, it is also about how you express yourself. This has two main points:
You need to work hard when preparing a speech. Use the words in a proper way to actually say something in an effective way.
You need to understand how other people think. Understand their perspectives and adapt your message for them to receive it.
In addition, by finding the way to accomplish both points, you are actually learning a lot about the way you express yourself. Also, learning about others' perspectives is a great open minder. We do need to learn that there is not one real truth, there is an extense palette of truths.
So, all in all, by simply giving a small talk to strangers we are feeling defied, working hard and finally, feeling like authentic warriors fighting for a noble cause (our own cause). Speaking in public, can boost our self-confidence (if you feel like an introvert, take this in mind). Finally, understanding other people perspectives can be very useful when dealing with them. We then, are able to use this skill when giving a speech and also in team-work atmosphere, or simply when dealing with people in our daily life.
